Gangplank

This project preceded the development of the ferry terminal (porosity) as a transitional project. With this gangplank I wanted to explore a structural system that could be expressive of an earlier concept model done for the ferry terminal (page 3). This string model explored density and porosity through the layering of various patterns. This concept was then applied to this project with the added aim of creating a visually complex structure that was comprised of several small repreating structural members. Through the use of smaller members, density of the structure becomes increased to compensate for the lower structural strength of the system. Therefore, aesthetic complexity could be achieved, through the implementation of a relatively simple structural system with a decreased member size. Ultimately the visual effects as well as the resulting patterning of the shadows relate back to the original concept model.
